Lightning Travels Faster Than Most Things on Earth
Lightning is one of those things that never stops feeling impressive no matter how many thunderstorms you watch. One second the sky is dark and quiet… and the next there’s a massive flash of light tearing across the clouds followed by rolling thunder shaking the entire atmosphere.
One of the craziest facts about lightning is just how unbelievably fast it moves. A lightning bolt can travel at speeds of around 270,000 km/h. Which honestly means that if lightning were some kind of delivery service, your package would arrive almost instantly… although there’s probably a pretty good chance it would also arrive slightly on fire.
Scientifically, lightning is a giant electrical discharge caused by imbalances between charged particles inside storm clouds and the ground below. As storms grow, collisions between ice particles, water droplets, and strong updrafts create regions of positive and negative electrical charge within the cloud. Once the electrical difference becomes large enough, the atmosphere can no longer insulate the charge buildup and a lightning discharge occurs.
Even though lightning moves incredibly fast, the reason thunder arrives later is because light travels much faster than sound. We see the flash almost instantly, while the sound waves from thunder take longer to travel through the atmosphere to reach us.
And honestly… the fact that lightning moves at nearly 270,000 km/h somehow makes thunderstorms even cooler.
