Kampala, Uganda Is One of the Stormiest Cities on Earth

When most people think about places with nonstop thunderstorms, they usually imagine somewhere in the United States or deep in the tropics of South America. Surprisingly though, one of the cities with the highest number of thunderstorm days each year is actually Kampala, Uganda, averaging around 240 storm days annually. That’s an incredible amount of thunder and lightning. Honestly, I never would have guessed Kampala either.

Located near the equator in East Africa, Kampala’s geography and climate create the perfect conditions for frequent thunderstorms. Warm tropical air, high humidity, and intense daytime heating all combine to fuel powerful storm development throughout much of the year.

One major factor is Kampala’s proximity to Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake in the world. The lake adds large amounts of moisture to the atmosphere, helping create unstable weather conditions that can trigger regular afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms form when warm moist air rises rapidly into cooler parts of the atmosphere. As water vapor condenses into clouds, massive amounts of energy are released in the form of heat. This process helps storms continue growing vertically into towering cumulonimbus clouds capable of producing lightning, heavy rain, and thunder.

Lightning itself is one of the most powerful natural electrical events on Earth. A single lightning bolt can heat the surrounding air to around: 30,000°C (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit) That’s roughly five times hotter than the surface of the Sun. The explosive expansion of superheated air is what creates the sound of thunder we hear rolling through the sky after a lightning strike.

For people who love rain ambience and thunderstorm sounds, a place like Kampala almost sounds unreal, frequent tropical storms, heavy rainfall, distant thunder, and dramatic skies throughout much of the year. It honestly sounds like an incredible place for recording immersive urban rain ambience and nighttime storm sounds.
