Lightning Can Heat the Air Hotter Than the Surface of the Sun

Thunderstorms are powerful, unpredictable, and honestly kind of incredible when you stop and think about what’s actually happening inside them. One of the wildest lightning facts is that a lightning bolt can heat the surrounding air to around 30,000°C (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit) which is roughly five times hotter than the surface of the Sun.

That intense burst of heat happens incredibly fast and causes the air to expand explosively, which is what creates the sound of thunder we hear rolling through the sky after a lightning strike.

It’s crazy to think that something so beautiful and relaxing to listen to from indoors can also contain such extreme energy. That contrast is part of what makes thunderstorms so fascinating, the peaceful sound of rain and distant thunder mixed with the raw power of nature outside the window.

At Urban Windows, thunderstorms, rain ambience, and nighttime city atmosphere recordings are a huge part of the channel.
